Castle: My Thoughts on the First Season
May 13th 2009 22:31
The ONLY reason I was interested in seeing this show was because of Nathan Fillion. I will watch anything he is in. So I tuned in just for him, not knowing much about the show, just it's basic premise. Let me tell you not only is Fillion amazing in his role as Richard Castle, but the rest of the cast shine almost as brightly as he does.
If you don't know what this show is about it's about Richard Castle, an uber successful mystery novelist who gets called in to the NYPD when someone starts killing people exactly the way it happens in some of his books. After meeting Det. Beckett, played by Stana Katic, Castle immediately finds, in her, a new character for a series of books. He manages to finagle his way in to being able to accompany her on murder cases and more often than not is a big help to the investigation.
I was not sold on Stana Katic's character right away, but she has grown on me a lot and the chemistry and banter she has with Fillion is very natural and convincing. The rest of the cast all work phenomenally with the two leads as well. Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever play detectives on det. Beckett's team. They work very well together and I love every scene they are in and never fail to make me laugh. I can't talk about the supporting cast with out mentioning Molly Quinn. She is so good in her role as Richard's mature teenage daughter, Alexis. She has great screen presence and commands your attention every time she is on screen. She has an incredibly bright future ahead of her.
Obviously these great characters would not be as endearing as they are if it weren't for great writing. I am very impressed, each episode, with it's writing. I think the best way to describe it is to say it's not lazy writing. Sometimes it seems like some writers don't put much effort into their writing and rely mostly on the actors to make it seem better than it is. But I don't sense that with this show. I feel like the writers work very hard to make the dialogue witty and believable and I am glad for that.
This show quickly became my favorite out of all the mid season replacements and I am looking forward to more.
