Fringe Series Premier

Just say no to drugs

I was lucky enough to stumble across an advanced screening of the pilot episode of Fringe. It was one of the strongest pilot episodes I've ever seen. It's basic premise deals with Fringe Science, stuff that is on the verge of break-through. It's not just dealing with fantastical science but science that could become reality very soon.

I thought the show did a great job of introducing the main characters and solidly integrating them into the show. Sometimes a character leaves you wondering why they are even around, but not here. Every main character is used very well here. John Noble's character of Dr. Walter Bishop will easily become an early fan favorite, probably because he gets the best and funniest lines. However Joshua Jackson(Peter Bishop) got several great lines as well and I thought his performance was the most solid. Anna Torv plays the main character Olivia Dunham, she also gives a very solid performance. She probably has the most difficult role on the show. She was able to pull off a wide range of emotions and did it well.

The script was very good. There must have been a lot of research that went into just this pilot episode. There were several moments though where the line delivery by the actors could have been much better, mostly with the comedic moments.

The episode did a tremendous job of drawing me into the story over all and left me wanting to know more at the end of it. I mean the last two lines of the episode opens up a whole new line of questions that you want answered. Let's just hope it doesn't pull a "Lost" and leave us in the dark for too long.

The special effects were very good as well and they tried something new in this show that I thought work pretty well. They used 3-D text across the screen to show where they are. I thought it was used very well. The production values for the pilot are very high. You usually don't see this kind of stuff in pilot episodes because the studio is unwilling to pay for it yet. You can tell that fox went all out for this and it is definitely going to pay off.

If you are a fan of The X-Files or just Science Fiction in general you may want to consider checking this show out. you might be pleasantly surprised.
