House: My Thoughts on House season 5
May 12th 2009 22:39
This season certainly had a lot of ups and downs. I thought this season had some of the weakest episodes of the whole series while on the other hand I thought it finished very strong with the best season finale since the first season.
Okay, so, weak episodes. I thought "Last Resort" was, by far, the worst episode of the series. I hated that episode so much that it nearly turned me off from the show entirely. I know there are many out there who disagree, but for me the episode was a "jump the shark" moment. I also thought that "Painless" and "Big Baby" were very weak. There were just many times through out this season where I could practically see the writer(or writers) struggling to come up with new case ideas and story lines for the show.
Lets talk about good episodes then. I loved "Birthmarks" that episode went down as one of my series favorites as soon as I was done watching it. Other stand out episodes in my opinion were: "The Social Contract", "Locked In" and the last three episodes of the season.
I'm so glad they started using Chase and Cameron more in the story lines during the second half of the season. Chase, Foreman and Cameron were/are all way more interesting characters than Taub, Kutner, and Hadley(thirteen).
There were some great guest stars this season as well. Michael Weston's role as the private detective Dr. House hires was a great one. In fact that was my favorite role Weston has ever had. Even though I despise the episode I thought Zeljko Ivanek was amazing in "Last resort". He did some great work with the material he had been given. Way better than his role in "Heroes". Mos Def's role in "Locked In" was perfect for him. I thought is was one of the more challenging guest roles of the season. And last, but not least was Carl Reiner's role in the season finale. It was just such a genuine, honest performance that I felt actual sorrow and pity for him at the end when House tells him he has something much more serious than just Acid Reflux.
I'm very excited for the next season. I'm eagerly anticipating how they will deal with and explore Dr. House's psyche after the events of the last couple episodes. Even though this season had some ups and downs, in my opinion, this show is going to have to do a lot worse to lose this loyal viewer.
