Review: Into the Wild
September 1st 2008 20:49
I don't know if this review will be able to accurately convey just how much this movie really impacted me. It's beautiful setting in Alaska(for most of the movie), the subtle direction of Sean Penn, or the profound dialog and and theme.
But What really drew me into this movie, the most, was the characters. I truly cared about them. As I watched them interact with the main character I could not wait to see what kind of profound impact they would have on each other. The casting is perfect. There was not one person I felt was miscast. Although, I guess that is easy to say considering how big the cast is and most of them being "unknowns". The person I thought shined the most was Kristin Stewart. Her scenes with Emile Hirsch are the best in the whole movie. I could go on about how amazing she is but I need to save room for more of the awesomeness that is this movie. I guess I should also mention the superior acting of Hal Holbrook who is nominated for an Oscar for his role in this movie. While Stewart stood out the most, Holbrook gives the most solid performance. It is worth watching the movie just for his character alone.
The film is not, however, without what I view as weaknesses. During the montages it would go split screen to show two or three different things going on at once. While interesting, I felt that style was out of place. Also I felt some of the music was out of place as well. The whole soundtrack was written by the great Eddie Vedder and most of the music was superb, but some of the songs felt like they were being forced into a scene instead of being a catalyst for awesomeness. This movie is not for everyone, especially if you can get bored in movies easily. It's a tad long. There are several unnecessary scenes that if cut would have made for a much tighter and more captivating movie.
Now you are probably wondering what kind of impact did this movie have on me. Did it change my life? No, nothing like that. What it did do, was strengthen my convictions about how I live my own life. Like being in the world but not of the world. Or finding happiness and what to do with it once you have found it. Wanting to have a positive impact on everyone I meet. I was left with a stronger desire to be proactive.
I probably won't actually sit through this movie all the way through again for some time, but there are scenes that I will watch over and over again. I highly recommend this movie to someone that, perhaps, is having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the most of of life
