Review of Children of Men

September 3rd 2008 22:37

Let me start off by saying this movie should be required viewing by the general public. Even more so by aspiring filmmakers. Being an aspiring filmmaker myself I can say that just by watching this movie I learned more about good film making, than going to several workshops or classes.

The director, Alfonso Cuaron, uses everything at his disposal to tell and progress the story. Especially the camera. In my opinion the camera work in this movie set a standard that other filmmakers should aspire to. A lot of people talk about the "long shot" toward the end of the movie, where Theo chases after the men who took Kee. That is an amazing accomplishment, but during my second watching I saw a couple other long shots that were almost as equally amazing and beautiful. Granted those other shots did not require the amount of precision that the last one took.

The attention to detail is remarkable. From the London 2012 Olympics sweater that Theo wears to the guns the British soldiers use during the siege. That's not easy stuff to organize and it shows you just how serious and committed Cuaron was to making this film.

The film also works on several different levels as well. It's thought provoking drama about human nature, but it's also a thriller that puts you on the edge of you seat. The spontaneous nature of the events are also worth mentioning. The great script and exceptional acting work together to make an unpredictable series of events that flow together so well you feel like you are right in the middle of the action.

I don't really have anything negative to say because if I did it would just be nit-picking and frankly who cares about the negative stuff in this movie anyway because pointing it out would detract from the enjoyment of this movie. See this movie.
