SNL: Michael Phelps/Lil' Wayne

September 14th 2008 06:53

This episode of SNL was definitely one of the better episodes of the last couple years. It was above average, in my opinion. It started out on a high note with a very funny sketch with Amy Poehler as Hilary Clinton and Tina Fey doing a very funny, and convincing, impression of Sarah Palin discussing what they do and do not have in common. It then moved on to a pretty funny opening monologue by Michael Phelps with a very funny cameo by William Shatner giving Michael advise about not selling out on endorsements. I was not a fan of the choice to have Micheal Phelps host the show, but he did a lot better job than I thought he would. You can tell that he worked really hard.

They then went on the the scetches, some were funny some weren't. The first four sketches were on par. They could have been funnier, but didn't deliver in the end. Once we got to Weekend Update things picked up from there. There was a really funny sketch about that T-Mobile circle of 5 friends commercial where the son adds all his sister's friends because they're hot. I thought the digital short was really funny. It was a music video, set in the future, with Andy Samberg singing about the "Space" Olympics that take place in the year 3022. Then We got our first real look at the new cast member, Bobby Moynihan. If the sketch he was in, where he plays a weird waiter for Micheal and Amy, is any indication of what is to come from him then I say more Bobby Moynihan. I thought he was brilliant in that sketch.

They finished out the night with a very clever commercial promoting the "Micheal Phelps" diet of 1200 calories. Jared Fogel(subway guy) had a cameo here where he comes out and tells Micheal his diet is crap.

Like I said, I thought this episode was above average. I laughed more than I have in most other recent episodes at least. I'm looking forward to next week's episode with James Franco.
