Dollhouse Season 1 on DVD/Blu Ray

August 24th 2009 02:19

So this is my review of the first season of Dollhouse on DVD or Blu Ray. Personally I watched it on Blu Ray.
Special Features

Deleted Scenes: These were fun. Sometimes deleted scenes can be boring because, you know, they're deleted for a reason. The most interesting scenes were the ones from the original pilot episode, but all are worth watching.

Making Dollhouse: This was your standard behind the scenes, making of, featurette. I found it interesting enough to not be bored. There are lots of interviews with cast and crew on how they feel about working on the show.
Coming Back Home: Several cast and crew interviews with people who have all worked with Joss Whedon before. Mainly they talked about how wonderful it was to be working with Joss again. Since I am a such huge Joss Whedon fan, I loved this little extra.
Finding Echo: A short feature on the evolution of the character Echo from the time the character was created till she hit the screen and what it takes for Eliza to play Echo.
Designing the Perfect Dollhouse: A behind the scenes look at what it took to build the set. I was amazed and what went into making the set. I now have a new found appreciation for the set of the Dollhouse itself. I never realized how big it was.
A Private Engagement: I found this feature kind of boring to be honest. It was just several interview with cast and crew about what they thought about the technology portrayed in the show. You could tell that some of the people who were interviewed really didn't care for some of the questions. I loved Tim Minear's reaction: "What are you an idiot?"

Epitaph One: This is the mysterious episode 13. I don't know what to say about it other than: Wow. Seriously, it's to bad they could have been doing these kind of episodes all season. You just have to see it for yourself.
Original Unaired Pilot: I think that had FOX allowed this to be aired in the first place this show would have gotten off to a better start with the fans. I think it established the concept of the show much better.

Commentary
Ghost: This was with both Joss and Eliza. I really liked this commentary it was funny and engaging and provided a lot of incite into the episode.
Man on the Street: I didn't find this commentary as engaging because it was Joss by himself. It was still very interesting though. This was one of my favorite episodes of the season.
Epitaph One: This was with commentary by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who wrote the episode. Out of the three episodes with commentary this was the least enjoyable to listen to. Most of the time it's like they are trying to figure out what they should say. Though, there are a few times where they provide some interesting bits of info.

I love this show, but even I will admit that the show had a pretty slow and rocky start. I wanted so much to like it when it first hit the air. At first the story lines of each episode were too, for lack of a better word, silly. Almost every episode had me scratching my head saying, at least once: "Really?" Even for a science fiction show, it was hard to swallow what they were trying to explain and investigate.

All that turned around for me once I saw episode 10: Safe. As soon as I was done viewing the episode I said: "That's what this show should have been doing from the beginning". That episode was a big turning point for the show. It was on a steady incline from that moment on. Now the show is easily one of my favorites on television right now.

So why do I like it so much? Well, right now I say: What's not to like?(if you're a fan on the genre) It's intriguing, it's mysterious with a little bit of horror thrown in. I laugh out loud at least a couple times per episode.

The cast has come together beautifully. They all have great on screen chemistry. Especially Joshua Jackson and John Noble, who play Father and Son. I swear John Noble better get an Emmy nomination or something for his role on this show. The emotion range he portrays is nothing short of extraordinary.

I am absolutely stoked for the next season. The season finale kicked the show into next gear and has set up a very expansive story for us to get read for.

The ONLY reason I was interested in seeing this show was because of Nathan Fillion. I will watch anything he is in. So I tuned in just for him, not knowing much about the show, just it's basic premise. Let me tell you not only is Fillion amazing in his role as Richard Castle, but the rest of the cast shine almost as brightly as he does.

If you don't know what this show is about it's about Richard Castle, an uber successful mystery novelist who gets called in to the NYPD when someone starts killing people exactly the way it happens in some of his books. After meeting Det. Beckett, played by Stana Katic, Castle immediately finds, in her, a new character for a series of books. He manages to finagle his way in to being able to accompany her on murder cases and more often than not is a big help to the investigation.

I was not sold on Stana Katic's character right away, but she has grown on me a lot and the chemistry and banter she has with Fillion is very natural and convincing. The rest of the cast all work phenomenally with the two leads as well. Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever play detectives on det. Beckett's team. They work very well together and I love every scene they are in and never fail to make me laugh. I can't talk about the supporting cast with out mentioning Molly Quinn. She is so good in her role as Richard's mature teenage daughter, Alexis. She has great screen presence and commands your attention every time she is on screen. She has an incredibly bright future ahead of her.

Obviously these great characters would not be as endearing as they are if it weren't for great writing. I am very impressed, each episode, with it's writing. I think the best way to describe it is to say it's not lazy writing. Sometimes it seems like some writers don't put much effort into their writing and rely mostly on the actors to make it seem better than it is. But I don't sense that with this show. I feel like the writers work very hard to make the dialogue witty and believable and I am glad for that.

This show quickly became my favorite out of all the mid season replacements and I am looking forward to more.

I am a huge, HUGE, Joss Whedon fan. I'm talking, like, everything he's done. Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, Serenity, and the other couple movies he's done. The man can do no wrong in my book. Dollhouse is no exception

This season certainly had a lot of ups and downs. I thought this season had some of the weakest episodes of the whole series while on the other hand I thought it finished very strong with the best season finale since the first season

Let me just start off by saying this is a show that more people should be watching. It is consistent and has an interesting way of telling a story that could potentially be very boring. The show explores many themes mostly about human nature, I think

Pushing Daisies: Comfort Food

December 4th 2008 20:02
This episode is easily the best episode of the second season, if not the whole series. Two mysteries are played out in this episode to great effect. Ned and Olive try to solve a murder at a cook off while Emerson helps Chuck clean up the mess she created by tricking Ned by keeping her father alive after Ned brought him back to life.

Like always the guest stars are put to great use in this episode. I love how Beth Grant recreates her role of Marianne Marie Beetle who previously appeared in the episode of Wonderfalls entitled "Muffin Buffalo" a show also created by Bryan Fuller

Fringe: Safe

This is the kind of episode people were expecting from Fringe from the beginning. What a great episode. It was exciting and intense. It mislead the audience, leaving us guessing to the very end and gave us an incredible cliffhanger. If they[the creative teams] can keep this quality up, they're going to have one amazing show on their hands

Best. Prank. Ever.

Well, this episode was a big step up from the last one. It had good sub plots and a some what intriguing medical mystery. And the best prank ever. Seriously, I did not see that coming

Prison Break: Deal Or No Deal

This season just keeps picking up more and more steam and doesn't seem to be letting up. The plot is kept tight and focused making absolutely sure the audience can't miss a minute. This show is not afraid to take risks with the twists and reveals and kill off characters to keep the story from spinning out of control

Well, this episode had an interesting factor going for it, but that's about it. We are finally shown what Cameron does at night and it leads to a pretty cool, but mostly slow plot. The episode was all about what happened when a T-888 is sent to the wrong time. I like how he still figured out how to accomplish his mission, which was to assassinate the Governor of California. I wonder if that is going to factor into future plots of the show, like if they will try to figure out why the Gov. was important enough to be eliminated

Ellie Versus the In-Laws

Something that has really been keeping the popularity of this show up is that it has consistently clever and funny writing. Not only is the writing consistent, it seems to get better with every episode

Bones: The Bone That Blew

I really liked this episode. The mystery that was written into the plot was outstanding. It had so many twists and turns and the attention to detail was amazing. I may go as far to say the murder plot was one of the best in the series. It ended up in a place that I never say coming. I thought I figured out "who done it" three times before the end

Pushing Daisies: Robbing Hood

This episode will definitely go down as one of the series best. A series that will soon be at it's end however. I'm very upset at it's cancellation, but that's how it goes. It's a shame that we will not be able to see just how far the show and it's character's could have expanded. I have high hopes for the entire cast though, Lee Pace especially. This show really helped it's stars show incredible acting rage and I'm sure it will help them land good roles in the future

Fringe: The Dreamscape

Well, I didn't enjoy this episode as much as I have the last couple, but this one still had a lot of good stuff in it. Some of our suspicions were confirmed by the Latino guy they apprehended toward the end. So I guess the major plot now is going to be trying to take down Massive Dynamic. I wonder when they will introduce William Bell, or maybe, Nina Sharp is really William Bell in disguise. That would be crazy! but also ridiculous

House: Last Resort

November 26th 2008 04:21

As I was watching this episode I wasn't sure how I felt about it. There were good parts and bad parts. How I feel about the episode, overall, was decided the second House gave the gun back to Jason. At that point the episode was ruined for me. I'm sorry to the people who like this episode, cause I know more people will like this episode than not, but this was a "jump the shark" moment for me. Are the writers that desperate to show how obsessed Dr. House can be? I know House will do anything to solve a case, but this was too much. Risking other people's lives like that? They tried to explain that's exactly why he gave the gun back, because he's obsessed, but he knows when to stop. The whole episode was a contrived mess. Sure it was intense and had great drama, but more like something you'd see on E.R., not an episode of House

Once again the show not only entertains but explores human nature. This episode is all about what happens when we get obsessed with something. We start seeing what we are obsessed with everywhere. Derek said it best... "First it's the dots, then the A.I. Now it's the chip. Whatever you've needed it to be, that's what it is

Prison Break: Selfless

November 25th 2008 04:34

Wow, what an episode. I mean, so much happened, so many twists and turns, it was crazy. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. For the first time I wish I hadn't read any spoilers. that way I could have enjoyed the twist at the end more. But why, oh why, did Shannon Lucio's character have to die?! She is so hot... ahem..., but such is this show. It is very similar to 24 in that way. Each episode will never end the way you think because so much will happen in such a short amount of time, but I love it

Chuck: Chuck Versus the Gravitron

November 25th 2008 04:13

I absolutely love the direction the show is going in. Little by little they are moving Chuck closer to who he is capable of becoming. I think that, eventually,(if the show lasts that long) Chuck will become an actual agent. In the Chuck graphic novels they show Chuck's future where he is an agent, and I love it. Zachary Levi, I have praised your performance in past episodes, and, in my opinion, this is your best performance yet. The scene toward the end where he traps Jill in the Nerd Herder was awesome, totally bad @$$! Chuck is capable of so much and, like I said, they are slowly showing us more and more of that

Supernatural: Heaven and Hell

November 21st 2008 04:37

As I watched this episode I kept thinking that it wasn't living up to what the previous episode set up for it, but man I was so wrong. The climax was just amazing and holy crap what a performance by Jensen Ackles there at the end with his monologue about being in hell
